Early morning rise, a decent ride - but allowing enough time to load bikes and depart at reasonable hour Sunday - Simple!
- Here’s what happened on Penrith Trip: -
3 of us travelled up together Friday 3pm. 2 other lads coming up later.
Arrived 5.30pm checked in and met host -Farm owner, chatted about bikes and routes pointed out to us on map, Farmer quite
knowledgeable about cycling as he offers Coast to Coast facility.
Set off for shortish ride and subsequently got lost, think this was due to not listening to directions properly as the Farmer had
mentioned a local Pie and Ale festival at pub.
SSS (see above) then lift down to village pub for the price of a pint by Farmer.
Pie heaven ensued, live band, and copious amounts of guest Real Ale, some members cope with this better than others (you know who
you are).
Obligatory visit to toilet during night, usually 5mins after you get in bed and then at varying intervals during night, made more
interesting by trying not to wake people up, split barn type door (a devil when you’re p####d) and then short outside walk to loo,
invigorating. Don’t worry nobody lasts the night without going.
Wake up with top quality hangover, grade 7 on the Richter scale.
Breakfast in farmhouse, sort out bikes, can’t remember what mine looks like or how I got here.
Cracking ride in Eden Valley lanes, traffic free and good road surfaces, stopped on bridge to watch trout in river, blaze of blue and
Kingfisher flew under bridge, magical. Rode to Pooley bridge, horses being watered in river by riders, lovely sight.
Café stop can’t remember where. Return to digs.
Evening stroll down river and then off to pub.
Sundays ride: to Appleby, watch trout in river fending off an eel for territory, nice Café stop in centre and then leisurely ride back
to digs.
Weather was fantastic for weekend which always helps, brilliant friends always willing to help if you do have a problem - a top laugh
all round.
- Cost: - Travel cheap if you share.
Digs: Penrith bunkhouse farm £15 a night, this included linen. Basic but its all you need.
Pub: Do I really need to tell you?
Café: Ditto
- Notes: - YHA Youth Hostel Association, inexpensive places to stay, loads of different venues just type in YHA in Google or
www.yha.org.uk/
Penrith was a privately operated bunkhouse, but format is similar at most of them.

New members are always welcome. We cater for everyone, whether it be leisure or racing.
For the leisure cyclist:
Club rides are at an easy pace during the week and on Sundays.
Visit the quite Lanes of Lancashire & Cheshire - enjoy the social banter of the group, and call at
interesting cafés along the way.
For the more competitive cyclist:
The club organises several "Open" events during the racing season (March -
September) and we also have a Club Competition for Championships from Youth to Veterans.
The racing section of the club participate in a good many events during the season, these include
time trials (solo and tandems ) over 10, 25, 30, 50 and 100 miles as well as 12 hour and 24 hour
events. We also have members who compete in road races, on the track, and in winter cyclo-cross
races. During the winter months we hold turbo training sessions, these are carefully structured
sessions that help towards the preparation for the racing season.
